One of my favorite practical frame projects is making a cork trivet. If you don’t know what a trivet is, they’re used on tables to set hot dishes on. Since cork is a great insulator, it’s a perfect material for creating a trivet. To make a cork trivet, you first need a lot of corks, a square picture frame with a flat molding, super glue (or other strong adhesive), thick cardboard with 4 tiny brad nails (or a flat frame back), felt squares.

Unless you drink a lot of wine, the best way to get a lot of corks is to ask all of your family members to start saving their corks. That’s what I did and in a month or two I had enough for the trivet.

I am certainly not a cork trivet expert, but here are some basic steps to making a framed cork trivet.

1) For my cork trivet, I used a square solid wood 12×12 picture frame with a simple wood molding. For the frame I used, it had an easel back stand, so I had to remove the regular frame back and had to replace it with a thick cardboard. In order to get the cardboard to stay in the frame, you will have to use four tiny brad nails on the back sides of the frame. The small brad nails will push into the wood frame so your cardboard will be secure.

2) Once the frame back is secure, turn the frame over so the face of the frame is sitting upward. Then begin to position your corks in the frame. You can put them all in one direction or create a pattern. And make sure to have plenty of extra corks, because I found that there are many different sizes of corks, so you sometimes have to get creative for them to all properly fit together.

3) Once you have the pattern you like, begin removing a single cork at a time and apply glue to one side of the cork. Keep doing that until all your corks are glued down.

4) Let the corks sit overnight so they can properly dry. Once they’re dry, you can choose to put adhesive felt squares (or circles) on the back of the frame to prevent the back of your frame from scratching your table.

Take a look at this black picture frame…it’s screaming to be cleaned.

However, sometimes frames can fool you into thinking they’re really dirty when in fact it’s just their finish.

Case in point, here is a 70+ year old hand carved picture frame that looks filthy. All around the carved ornamentation there is a light gray brown haze. It looks like this wood picture frame hasn’t been cared for in years, but it’s actually the finish designed to look old.

So, before you get out the dust cleaner, keep these few tips in mind.

Generally, if the frame is old, or has a painted antique finish, you should use extra caution when cleaning your frame. For any frame with an antique finish, a metal finish or an unfinished wood finish, only use a slightly damp cloth to clean your frames. I would not suggest using a liquid dust cleaner on these types of frames, otherwise you could run the chance of damaging your frame.

If you’re trying to clean a frame with a lot of crevices, use a cotton q-tip and slightly moisten it with water. This way you can get to the little cracks and crevices  that most dusting won’t get.

On my own frames, I only use a slightly moistened towel with water. This is enough to pick up the dust and give your frame a clean new look.  Another important step you should take in cleaning your frames is to remove the glass and wipe it down with glass cleaner. Just remember not to put the glass back until it is 100% dry otherwise, you could ruin your picture by having it adhere to the glass.

With just a few minutes of cleaning, your picture frames will keep looking good for years of enjoyment.

The first thing you should consider is the purpose or use of the picture frame. If you’re giving the wedding frame as a gift, you want to find out if the bride and groom prefer silver, gold or wood tones. Try to narrow down the type of material they prefer first and then look at the different styles of frames. By doing it this way, you’ll save time and avoid getting overwhelmed with all of the choices.

We are excited about being able to offer these new spring 2010 frames and will be offering even a few more new Dennis Daniels frames very shortly!

If you don’t know what a photo scavenger hunt is, it’s where you give your kids a camera and a list of things they need to find to take pictures of. Whoever, finds and takes the most pictures of the items on their list -wins.

You can do this activity with young children as early as five or you can create teams and include younger children as well. Just remember that you need to have at least one child who knows how to use a camera. And, if a child doesn’t have a camera, you can always use an inexpensive disposable camera.

Here are a couple of things to consider before you start:

1) Set boundaries of where the children can go. In most cases, your backyard can work great. Just remember that safety should always come first.

2) Set rules. Make sure that everyone starts at the same time and place. Also, set a specific ending time (even if no one wins) and a place where everyone must return to. Another thing you should consider is that each child knows that they shouldn’t take too many pictures of any one object. Try to have them take no more than 2 -3 pictures of each item on their list.

3) Give each child or team, a list of 10-15 objects to find. Give a mix of items so some items are easy to find while others are more difficult. For each item on the list, assign a point value to it based upon the difficulty of finding the item. While making your list be thinking of items that are fun to find and help educate as well.

Bird photography is one of the most popular types of animal photography and can be one of the most difficult. The biggest challenge with taking bird pictures is getting the birds to perch exactly where you want them. So here are some tips for how to attract birds to your yard and how you can persuade them to perch on branches perfect for taking pictures.

The best way to get great bird pictures is to create a bird “photo shoot” and attract birds to your backyard.  So, here are a few tips in creating a bird friendly backyard.

1) Create feeding stations and birdbaths in areas that are great for taking pictures (offer nice backgrounds). Try to have a background in a solid color like green, brown or black as this will make the bird really stand out in your image. Try to avoid areas with sunshine hot spots (that show as a bright white spots) as these will distract from the bird in the picture.

2) Choose a location that gives the birds a little protection and makes them feel safe from predators.

3) Determine what types of birds you want to attract and then find out what is the proper type of bird food to attract them. You can find out by checking with the Audubon Society or going to the National Wildlife Federation’s Gardening for Wildlife website for more information. It’s important to feed the birds properly with quality seed as if you give them “bread crumbs” during the winter they may fill up on this “junk food” and be unable to stay warm at night.

4) Position bird feeders and bird baths near trees or shrubs that have areas easy for perching. By having the feeders near trees with low branches, this increases the chance the birds will land there before going to the feeder or bird bath.

Once you have a good position for your bird photo shoot, now you need to set up your camera for shooting. Normally, the best way to get a great bird picture is staking out a location and waiting for them to land.  This generally won’t take long if you have your feeding stations set up and established as a source of food. But for photographers who prefer to work on chance, you can occasionally get lucky when chasing birds from branch to branch. The only problem is that you have to hope the bird stays on the branch long enough for you to get the shot. So, here are some tips on setting up your camera.

1) Since birds are so active, you will need a high shutter speed  of at least 1/250 (or you can also use Spots mode). If you don’t use a high shutter speed, a slight flick of a tail or head movement will leave your photos fuzzy.

2) If you can, use a telephoto lens on your SLR.  Or, if you have an optical zoom on your digital compact camera definitely use it. When using a zoom or telephoto lens, you will also need a tripod otherwise your images will lack clarity. And if you are trying to take birds in flight or perched high in trees, professional photographers often use a 600 lens to capture good detail from far away.  Since telephoto lens are expensive, some birders use digiscoping. Digiscoping combines a spotting scope with a digital camera as you can read about here.

Hopefully these few tips can help you attract more birds to your yard and help you capture some truly amazing bird photographs.

The Modern series comes with a pre-cut archival white mat in sizes 4×6 up through 8×10, however doesn’t include a mat in frames larger than 8×10.  This Modern series of frames comes in five different colors: red, sage green, black, white and chocolate and has a seamless wood frame front.

Metro Wood Picture Frames

The Metro Series, on the other hand, includes a white archival mat in every size from 4×4 up through 20×24. This frame has a smooth, seamless front and is available in black and white. The exhibit includes over 40 nib pen and ink drawings painted in watercolor, ranging in size from 7 inches to 7 feet. This exhibit was inspired by the Italian astronomer, Galileo Galilei and his discovery in January of 1610 when he observed four very bright objects close to Jupiter. This led Galileo to later conclude that the sun was the center of the universe and published his findings in his book, The Starry Messenger. It is the scientific event that changed the course of history and was the springboard for this exhibit. McNeal explains “The work is about the people who have been in that particular space and what they have done there. I chose to draw shoes to represent the people themselves.” The shoes are depicted from photos taken by Meridith of people in the streets of Rome and shoe images in Roman advertising while she was in residence at The American Academy in Rome in the spring of 2009.
